November 2026 Chapter Meeting

About this event

This meeting we have the pleasure of being invited by the Fresno State ASHRAE Student Chapter to Co-host this meeting. Come meet the next generation of ASHRAE members.

We will be meeting in the Industrial Technology Building, the address is above, Room IT160. A $5 parking pass is required to park lawfully on campus, and can be purchased at parking pass kiosks on campus .Carpooling is highly encouraged.

Topic: Hydronic system balancing, proportional or automatic?

This Hydronic Balancing course provides a comprehensive overview of the principles, methods, and benefits of properly balancing HVAC water systems, emphasizing how proportional balancing ensures design flow is delivered to every terminal unit for optimal comfort, system efficiency, and energy conservation. Participants learn why unbalanced systems lead to excess pumping, reduced delta‑T, wasted energy, and equipment stress, contrasted with balanced systems that maintain design performance and reduce operating costs. The course explores key balancing technologies—including manual balancing valves, dynamic flow‑limiting devices, and pressure‑independent control valves—while outlining their advantages, limitations, and compliance considerations such as ASHRAE 90.1 requirements for proportionally balanced hydronic systems. Through diagrams, system examples, and methodology walkthroughs, learners gain an understanding of how balancing valves support accurate flow measurement, pressure equalization, and system optimization, ultimately improving occupant comfort, reducing lifecycle costs, and identifying performance issues early.
