COMMUNITY NEWS

  • First 5 Fresno County is set to award $3 million to nonprofits that help Valley families, planning to contract about 10 grantees (each may receive up to $300,000 for two years). Applicants must submit electronically by March 4.  ABC30

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fresno Unified’s superintendent Misty Her warned after a student walkout at Hamilton K-12 and other schools raised safety concerns on Thursday. She urged parents to keep students on campus (where staff provide monitored safe spaces for civic expression).  KMPH
  • Fresno-based Parsec Education held its third Measure What We Value summit on Wednesday, Feb. 4, to discuss student success with panels on mental health, leadership, and data use, and the event featured local art honoring Black History Month and a performance by West African drummers.  Fresnoland
  • ASI appointed Cody Jarvis as senator for research and innovations and Nellie Chobanyan as senate secretary at its Feb.4 meeting in Resnick Student Union Room 207. It also announced IRA funding opening today until March 6 with plans to provide dorm food support for students during spring break.  The Collegian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fresno city workers lost in-network care starting Feb. 1 when Community Medical Center’s contract with Blue Shield expired, leaving many to pay higher premiums while seeking care elsewhere. City Manager Georgeanne White said a special meeting will be held in March if a new deal is not reached.  ABC30
  • The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help to locate relatives of 46-year-old Daniel Joseph Lawrence, who died in a nursing home. Officials say family members must be identified before his remains can be released for burial.  GV Wire

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fresno cancer survivor Frida Sofia, 20, overcame near-fatal Stage 3 tumors and a rare blood disorder in high school and is now cancer-free and studying medicine while her mother supports her by launching a chamoy gummies business (available on TikTok and Facebook) to cover medical bills.  KMPH
  • On Thursday at Valley Children's Hospital, family, friends and staff held an honor walk for six-year-old Isabella who died days after a car accident to honor her organ donation, an act expected to aid six to eight patients with organs and up to 72 with tissue donation.  ABC30

SPORTS NEWS

  • Fresno State appears in MLB The Show 26’s Road to the Show mode, allowing players to experience college baseball at Bob Bennett Stadium + Diamond 'Dogs, with preorders open and the game set to release on March 17.  The Collegian
  • The Fresno State Bulldogs will face the Nevada Wolf Pack today at 10:15 a.m. in Reno as Nevada enters the game with a strong home record (11-2) and Corey Camper Jr. recently scored 35 points in an overtime loss to Boise State while the Bulldogs aim to improve their MWC mark.  ABC30
  • Coach Entz is optimistic about the Bulldogs’ 2026 recruiting class that adds 43 players (25 high school recruits and 18 transfers) to boost quarterback and tight end depth. The team, moving to the Pac-12, will open the season on Sept. 5 at USC with more games scheduled later.  GV Wire
