COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fresno officials have opened three warming centers at Ted C. Wills, Mosqueda, and Maxie L. Park Community Centers as valley lows near freezing. The centers provide free shelter with meals, blankets and pet accommodations and operate from 7 P.M. to 7 A.M. through Friday.  ABC30

  • JayDee from Herencia de Patrones discussed his journey from farmworker to singer and actor while previewing his movie Clika; the Spanish version premiered in México on Thursday, Feb. 19.  KMPH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central Unified Board is exploring a Dual Language program in Spanish and Punjabi for nearly 16,000 students. Superintendent Mark Marshall said the district will study successful immersion models + plans to share a detailed rollout timeline by this fall.  ABC30
  • Fresno doctor Dr. Manisha Mittal (author of The Immune Warriors Club) shared her family's real experiences with autoimmune disease in a children's book series now available on Amazon.  ABC30

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A winter storm has brought rain and snow to mountain communities as CHP enforces chain requirements on Highway 168; crews are working to keep roads safe and travelers are advised to drive slowly + pack extra supplies.  ABC30
  • Golden mussels were detected two months ago in the Friant-Kern Canal and may soon disrupt water deliveries; officials held a board meeting and will hire a consultant + seek state grants in March to develop a treatment plan.  KMPH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) halted a planned rule change that would have based disability payments on medication use rather than impairments after veterans groups raised concerns earlier this week. Officials said they will continue collecting public comments while keeping the current system for veterans in Fresno.  ABC30
  • After stalled talks left over 12,000 subscribers without in-network coverage, the city council backed the Health and Welfare Trust Board with $50,000 to explore a new health plan; the board will meet on March 11 to seek care solutions for workers + families.  GV Wire

  • Dr. Bhatia at the Neuro-Pain Medical Center in northeast Fresno demonstrates simple brain speed exercises that may lower dementia risk by 26% as shown in a 20-year study in the Alzheimer’s Association research journal+ he recommends people over 50 try these sessions to keep their minds sharp.  ABC30
