COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sumner Peck Ranch hosts its final u-pick citrus season as a restoration project begins along the San Joaquin River. The grove (open Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until April 15) offers oranges, pomelos, mandarins, and lemons at $1.50 per pound with a short quarter-mile hike required.  ABC30
  • This weekend at Woodward Park, thousands will join the Support Blue Run to honor local law enforcement and benefit Fresno Police and Fire Chaplaincy.  ABC30

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Construction is underway on a new Starbucks at Church Avenue and MLK Jr. Boulevard — near Rutherford B. Gaston Middle School in southwest Fresno. The shop is expected to open this summer.  ABC30

ECONOMY NEWS

  • USDA will cut $48 million in funding for small Central Valley farmers by June, risking support that helps growers sell locally. Local groups and state officials are exploring state-funded measures to keep farms open — a potential lifeline for Fresno agriculture.  ABC30

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fresno Unified will vote today on over 250 potential job cuts, including preschool teachers and Spanish-language liaisons, to tackle a $59 million deficit for the coming school year. Approved cuts will take effect June 30.  Fresnoland
  • Fresno State Esports is expanding its program after winning seven championships in national competitions. The club, operating under ASI and Student Involvement (with varsity and junior varsity teams), hosts community games that welcome full-time students and local gamers.  GV Wire
  • Adileni Carcano, an eighth grader at Raisin City Elementary, was named Superintendent Superstar this month after earning a 4.0 GPA and excelling in community service (volunteering at local charities) and sports. She will work hard to achieve her dream job and build a garden for her mom.  KMPH
  • Fresno State announced that its inaugural chief of staff, Diana Ralls, will become a senior adviser on March 1 (she will retire at the end of the year) as Chief Communications Officer Lauren Nickerson takes over the role. The move ensures continuity in the president's office.  The Collegian
  • Empower Speech Therapy & Life Skills Center in Northeast Fresno is helping the Gonzales family guide nearly two-year-old Lucien’s early learning with in-home speech therapy and activity plans, while partnering with the Central Valley Regional Center to ease resource access for families.  ABC30
  • Washington Union High's robotics program earned two championship spots—one team won a Bakersfield tournament last weekend and qualified for the US Open while the state championship is set for March 14 at Cal State, Bakersfield.  ABC30
  • The Clothing Closet at Houghton-Kearney Elementary reopens today to give students new clothes, backpacks, belts, and hygiene kits + donations from local partners. School officials say the expanded space now helps the entire district, supporting around 300 students a year.  ABC30

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials met Monday at the parks and arts commission to discuss covering missing Measure P arts grant funds by temporarily reallocating parks department dollars if no funds are recovered from the Fresno Arts Council. (33 grant recipients remain unpaid) and a follow-up meeting is set for March 16.  Fresnoland

  • Fresno content creator Desiree Rodriguez will serve as Casinos.com's ambassador at the World Series of Poker championship, which runs from May 26 to July 15 at Paris Las Vegas Hotel + Casino and Horseshoe Las Vegas. She beat thousands of applicants for a $10,000 tournament seat.  GV Wire
