CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Fresno Police officer shot a woman in her 40s who held a knife to an innocent bystander at the busy FAX Transit Center near Manchester Center—she is now in serious condition while the officer is on paid administrative leave as police investigate the incident. KMJ Now
- ➤ Two Fresno County men—51-year-old podiatrist Felipe Ruiz and 52-year-old sales representative Jose Gabriel Aguirre—were charged on Thursday with conspiracy to commit health care fraud after allegedly allowing unlicensed skin graft applications that led to false Medicare and Medi-Cal claims and face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. - ➤ Fresno residents Marcus Asay (69) and Antonio Gastelum (53) were sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd to five years and two years in prison, respectively, for leading a pension fraud scheme through their labor firm Agricultural Contracting Services Association dba American Labor Alliance, which also received a $2.5 million corporate fine after their conviction on June 18th. - ➤ Fresno City Council approved a resolution on Thursday asking the state not to grant parole to convicted rapist Rudolph Acosta, known as the Tower District Rapist, who was sentenced to 78 years for attacks in the 1990s — a councilmember is gathering community signatures to keep him behind bars. - ➤ High school senior Alex Sandoval leads Duncan Polytechnical High School's team in the second annual Design Build Competition, where 16 teams work to finish a shed by today and gain hands-on experience in real-world construction. The event has expanded to include culinary, medical, crime scene investigation, multimedia and welding teams—offering program funds and individual scholarships to support students’ futures. ABC30

- ➤ Brandon Vang was sworn in as Fresno councilmember on March 18 after winning the special election and immediately canceled a $100,000 contract with Tavlian’s firm—saving city funds for District 5. - ➤ At City Hall today, the Fresno City Council voted 6—0 to oppose the release of Rudolph Martin Acosta, known as the Tower Rapist, whose next parole hearing is on June 6 at Avenal State Prison. The council also approved transferring $195,000 to Councilmember Miguel Arias’ operating budget, awarded a $12.9 million contract for a new 9-1-1 center to begin this summer—with an expected finish in fall—and planned to appeal a permit denial for A’s Family Market.
