CRIME NEWS

  • Fresno Police responded Tuesday night to a 15-round ShotSpotter alert near Valeria and Grant avenues when two shooters exchanged fire and a bystander was struck by return fire; officers arrested Jacob Castro (suspected of multiple firearm offenses) and he now faces charges (including assault with a firearm and possession violations).  Your Central Valley
  • A federal grand jury indicted 51-year-old Felipe Ruiz of Fresno and 52-year-old Jose Gabriel Aguirre of Clovis for conspiring to commit health fraud—Ruiz, a podiatrist at West Coast Podiatry Inc., allegedly bought skin grafts from Aguirre, who used his wife’s name and unlicensed status to bill Medicare and Medi-Cal for procedures performed between June 2021 and January 2024.  The Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fresno City College is set to name Fresno native Denise Whisenhunt as its new president if approved by board in May—she is slated to begin in July after a search that lasted more than nine months.  KVPR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fresno officials announced that the Smuggler’s Restaurant site will be redeveloped into a four-story, 114-unit affordable housing complex on Blackstone — 45 units will be for veterans. The project will also include a bike lane, hydrogen cell buses and urban greening along sidewalks as part of the city’s ongoing effort to expand housing in the area.  Your Central Valley

  • Fresno County Economic Development Corporation held its 20th annual Real Estate Forecast on April 11 at the DoubleTree in Downtown Fresno. Mayor Jerry Dyer spoke with PG&E CEO Patti Poppe in a chat where she said his comments were strong—leaders also discussed build-to-rent plans, a proposed vacancy tax and future affordable housing projects.  The Business Journal
