  • Self-Help Enterprise held a celebration in Fresno for 22 families who finished building their affordable homes on East Annandale Ave—using sweat equity. Tri Counties Bank worked with the Mutual Self-Help Housing program to keep costs low and ensure long-term stability.  KMPH
  • The non profit Shoes that Fit delivered 575 pairs of new shoes to Lane Elementary students on April 24—another 135 pairs reached five other Fresno schools with help from local couple Lou and Dena McMurrary.  ABC30

CRIME NEWS

  • Fresno police arrested three suspects after an armed home invasion at Maplewood Condominiums near Fresno State on January 26 — the suspects, including one in body armor who reached for a rifle during a chase, broke in, stole a safe, and fled in an SUV — and one suspect suffered a gunshot wound while officers recovered an AR-15–style rifle.  Your Central Valley
  • Fresno police said 52-year-old Bryan Blackman admitted to fatally stabbing his 25-year-old son outside the apartment door at the El Cazador Apartments on Wednesday—his son later died at the hospital.  KMJ Now
  • Fresno County investigators arrested Robert Castillo (61) for the 2004 murder of Barbara Lee (43) near California and Polk Avenues after DNA evidence linked him to the crime, and he now faces charges of murder, two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault with bail set at $2.1 million.  KMPH
  • Fresno police released video showing that on January 26, officers shot a suspect during a home invasion at an apartment complex on North Backer Avenue near Fresno State—three men in masks and vests were chased, one was injured and recovered, and all three were arrested.  ABC30

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fresno Unified’s first female and Hmong superintendent Misty Her set four goals to boost reading, career and college readiness, and life skills to guide budget cuts and staff changes. She said her plan will get action in the next 100 days after the board named her superintendent by a 6 to 1 vote on April 23 — marking a shift toward results-based change.  GV Wire

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fresno City Council delayed a vote on a plan to revert 60 acres on Elm Avenue from mixed-use back to industrial zoning until May 22 after a developer's request. Some residents fear the change will undo a hard-won community plan for better health and safety+ experts say the current rules do not block financing options.  Fresnoland
  • Fresno is planning road work near Fresno Yosemite International Airport next week that will repave intersections at Chestnut and McKinley and at Peach and McKinley. Monday and Tuesday, Chestnut operates with one lane each direction and McKinley closes with detours via Peach and Cedar—while Wednesday and Thursday, Peach uses one lane and McKinley closes with detours at Chestnut and Clovis.  GV Wire
