ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A bicyclist died after being hit by a car near Highway 41 on Jensen Avenue just after 11 p.m. Saturday as first responders pronounced him dead at the scene and police later recovered the vehicle while reporting the driver was not under the influence.  ABC30
  • A 24-year-old man died after his Dodge Challenger led CHP officers on a high-speed chase along Highway 180 in Fresno County—he lost control on an off-ramp, his car overturned several times, and he was not wearing a seatbelt.  ABC30

CRIME NEWS

  • CHP K-9 Sergeant stopped a 2018 Honda Accord for a traffic violation and discovered 13 pounds of cocaine hidden (in a compartment built into the exhaust tunnel accessed via the center console), leading to the driver's arrest for possession and transportation of cocaine and for using an aftermarket compartment to transport narcotics.  KMPH

CULTURE NEWS

  • La Elegante Taqueria celebrated its 40th anniversary on Sunday with live mariachi music and a tribute to founder Don Benito, whose legacy lives on through the family’s taco truck and restaurant near Chukchansi Park. Fresno City Council and Mayor Jerry Dyer declared April 27 La Elegante Taqueria Day (a mark of its long tradition) as the business looks forward to serving Fresno customers for many more years.  KMPH

SPORTS NEWS

  • Fresno State’s women’s water polo team lost to Loyola Marymount 14 to 12 in the GCC final on April 27 at the Burns Aquatics Center, ending its bid for a fifth straight title. Senior players Abbey Simshauser and Brooke Ochoa finished their careers with all-tournament honors—while the Lions won their first GCC title since 2015.  The Collegian
  • Fresno State Diamond ‘Dogs swept Washington State in a three-game series over the weekend and held sole first place in the Mountain West Conference with a 15-6 record. They will travel on Tuesday, April 29 — to play University of Pacific — and return home on May 6 for their next game at Bob Bennett Stadium.  The Collegian
