CRIME NEWS

  • Fresno police charged Martin Campos, Jr. with attempted murder, firearms violations, vehicle hit and run, and child endangerment after he rammed his ex-girlfriend’s car and fired a shot during a chase that ended in a crash near Jensen Avenue and Highway 99—Campos later surrendered after crashing into two vehicles and has an arraignment scheduled for today with bail set at $1,785,600.  KMPH
  • A bicyclist in his late 30s died Sunday in Fresno when a black sedan struck him at Thesta and Belmont Avenues—police are using surveillance cameras to track the driver.  KMPH
  • A man was stabbed at an apartment complex on Ashlan and Fruit avenues in northwest Fresno on May 12th, and he was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition while police arrested a suspect—he was booked into Fresno County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon.  ABC30

  • Fresno appointed Cliff Long as its new economic development director—he brings experience from growing Idaho boomtowns and will begin his role on Monday, May 19 to boost local business and create jobs.  GV Wire

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fresno City Attorney Andrew Janz is prosecuting his office’s first wage theft case on behalf of construction workers who were paid as little as $50 a day for renovations at a local Holiday Inn. The complaint—filed on May 9 in Fresno County Superior Court—names Pinnacle Hospitality and Development Inc. and two individuals for multiple labor violations and seeks roughly $58,000 in unpaid wages plus possible punitive damages.  Fresnoland
  • On May 12, Fresno City Attorney Andrew Janz and Councilmember Tyler Maxwell announced that the city filed its first wage theft lawsuit against Pinnacle Hospitality and Development CEO Lakhwinder Singh Brar and contractor Juan Moreno—allegedly underpaying nine construction workers at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites near Highway 99 and Herndon Avenue between April 2023 and September 2024 with a claim of about $58,000 in unpaid wages.  The Business Journal
  • On May 12th, Fresno’s wage theft unit filed its first case against hotel owner Pinnacle Hospitality, its owner Lakwinder Singh Brar, and contractor Juan Moreno for 11 alleged labor code violations that left workers $58,000 short plus Councilmember Tyler Maxwell vowed to protect the program amid ongoing budget challenges.  GV Wire

  • Fresno’s Fig Garden Village—a shopping center established in 1956—was sold to DRA Advisors and CenterCal on May 9; the new owners plan to upgrade the property and add new tenants to strengthen its role in the community.
