Good morning, Fresno.

Authorities conducted a multi-agency operation on May 20 that served seventy-one search warrants and seized over 105,000 illegal cannabis plants and 22,000 pounds of processed cannabis valued at $123.5 million—nine firearms were confiscated with multiple arrests pending charges.

Fresno County supervisors passed an ordinance that allows law enforcement to arrest anyone caught with an unattached catalytic converter — the new rule targets thefts from vehicles, businesses, and farms and imposes penalties of up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine if ownership cannot be verified.

Fresno County court officials announced that since May 19 jurors have received $15 a day instead of $100 after the governor ended the AB 1981 jury pilot study; jurors who served on or before May 19 will continue to be paid at the old rate (to honor their prior service).

Today, Fresno’s planning commission is voting on draft final documents for SEDA—a massive 45,000-home project that could cost taxpayers $4.3 billion in infrastructure and leave a $3 billion funding gap if developer fees cover only 20% of costs.

City officials warn that the project may not boost overall housing production and could saddle residents with long-term debt.

Fresno County supervisors approved a three-year contract for in-home care workers on Tuesday that raises hourly wages from $17.10 to $18.35 and improves health care benefits for about 2,000 workers who help nearly 24,000 elderly and disabled residents (pending state approval).

The deal came after more than two years of talks (it will raise county IHSS costs by about $8.5 million in fiscal year 2025) and marks a shift in support for care workers.

On Tuesday, the Fresno County Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance to fight surging catalytic converter thefts.

The new law lets police stop and penalize people who cannot prove they own the parts, using fines + jail time as penalties.

Better Opportunities broke ground on a $4.7M project to turn the long-vacant Econo Inn on Broadway into 25 workforce housing units for families earning 60 to 80% of the area’s median income, with plans to open by November.

The project’s $188K per-unit rehabilitation cost is nearly half that of similar developments—secured with $1.9M from the American Rescue Plan and a $147K waiver in impact fees.
