Good morning, Fresno. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 22nd of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Wednesday, cyclists from Fresno County and across the Central Valley gathered at Buchanan High School’s main parking lot from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for the 23rd annual Ride of Silence to honor 16-year-old Sandro Lazo and Clovis teen Agamjodh Singh Cheema, whose ride coincided with his 14th birthday—organizers aimed to raise awareness about cycling safety and remember lives lost on the roads.  KMPH

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 2, a crash on Clovis Avenue killed 19-year-old Jordan Galvez and 18-year-old Maddux Greene, and on Wednesday morning Jagat Singh—previously on probation for a 2023 DUI—pleaded not guilty to murder charges as the grieving families await further legal proceedings.  ABC30

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fresno City Council will consider a proposal today at 5:30 p.m. that fast-tracks housing approvals by allowing office-zoned areas to convert to housing by-right—raising concerns over local oversight and potential loss of state funding. Some councilmembers support the change to boost infill housing while others worry it gives developers too much power.  Fresnoland
  • Fresno City Council will vote today on a plan to change 60 acres in Southwest Fresno from neighborhood mixed-use to industrial zoning, a move many say will increase pollution and remove 4,000 housing units. Councilmember Miguel Arias warned the change may violate state law and ignore long-term community plans + millions already spent on local improvements.  Your Central Valley
  • Veterans in Fresno may soon find it easier to start a business as councilmembers Nick Richardson and Nelson Esparza proposed the SERVE Act that would waive business tax license fees and reduce startup costs for veteran-owned operations—tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis businesses are not eligible. The ordinance will be on the council’s agenda tomorrow and if it passes, it will go into effect in about a month—veteran business owner Austin Naes said his gym would benefit.  ABC30
  • CHP announced its annual statewide Memorial Day Holiday Enforcement Period that runs from Friday at 6:01 p.m. to Monday at 11:59 p.m.—officers will use new low-profile patrol vehicles while monitoring impaired, reckless driving and seatbelt violations to keep everyone safe.  Your Central Valley
  • Attorney Roger Bonakdar said Fresno Unified should settle the defamation suit brought by former coach Don Arax after a deposition video shows trustee Keshia Thomas denying earlier comments. The district could face tens of millions in damages—legal fees may quickly rise if a jury finds it liable.  GV Wire

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local doctors in the valley are urging men to get prostate cancer screenings as the disease is a leading cause of death and often shows no early symptoms. They advise high-risk groups—such as African Americans and those with a family history—to talk with their doctor about a PSA test when they turn 50 so that the cancer can be treated early.  ABC30
