COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Memorial Day events run from today through Monday in the Central Valley with a run in Clovis on Saturday at 6:30 a.m., a concert and BMX race Sunday, and ceremonies and parades in Fresno, Tulare, and Porterville to honor veterans. Many activities are free+low-cost and open to the public.  ABC30
  • Local wedding and event vendors will be honored at the Central Valley gala as organizers at Bespoke Collective invite the public to submit nominations online until May 31 (voting starts June 25). The awards ceremony will take place in August.  ABC30
  • On Thursday morning, the Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation and the County awarded $85K in grants to support 23 mobile food vendors in downtown Fresno, with each vendor receiving up to $4K to further their business goals (including King Elotero Man, which serves unique elote dishes).  ABC30

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Chevron has posted signs at gas stations in the Central Valley explaining that state policies — including high taxes — are driving up gas prices. The company says the effort will help customers understand why fuel costs remain high in the region.  KMPH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A record number of graduates celebrated this week as State Center Community College District held its 11th annual ceremony at Save Mart Center on Thursday (with additional events planned at Reedley College, Madera, and Fresno City College), marking a growing trend in community college enrollment.  ABC30

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • San Francisco Superior Court Judge Richard Darwin granted an injunction on Thursday that lets California cardrooms, including Fresno's Club One Casino (which contributes $1M annually), keep blackjack even after Attorney General Rob Bonta banned the game because the ruling cited threats to local jobs and funds.  GV Wire
  • Costco received City Council approval on Thursday to move to a 22.4-acre site in northwest Fresno. The new 220,000 sqft store will include 32 gas pumps, a car wash, and a Market Delivery Operation to speed deliveries, though a local group will continue fighting over environmental concerns.  The San Joaquin Valley Sun

  • A Fresno State study shows central California’s DUI fatality rate is twice the state average as researchers examine factors like speeding and prior violations; findings will be shared with local agencies in September.  ABC30
