Good morning, Fresno. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 30th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officers from Fresno PD, CHP and Sheriff's joined a nine-mile torch run on Friday supporting athletes of the Special Olympics Northern California. The run — with stops at Fresno City Hall, Chick-fil-A and Doghouse Grill — continues today in Kings County before the June 26 event in Santa Clara.  ABC30

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rancho Laguna de Tache was granted in 1843 by Governor Pio Pico to Manuel Castro and then passed to Jerimah Clark and a syndicate led by Edward B. Perrin, shaping local water rights and farming. A hand-drawn map from that era is held at University of California (Bancroft Library).  KVPR
  • Historic water rights from Rancho Laguna de Tache once funded irrigation canals that boosted Fresno’s raisin industry; legal battles gave Edward B. Perrin and successors control, leaving a legacy that still shapes local agriculture — a story featured by KVPR’s Central Valley Roots report.  KVPR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Johnny Alvarado, a candidate for Fresno County Superintendent, admitted on KMJ radio Friday that he was not truthful about his earlier administrative leave from Parlier Unified—he said he now has documentation to prove his retirement. He declined an interview citing a family matter.  ABC30
  • Fresno Unified Superintendent Misty Her has worked with first-grade students at Mayfair Elementary every Monday since the school year began using the Orton-Gillingham method (a move that boosted reading proficiency to 84%), and the district will expand this approach to all elementary classrooms.  GV Wire
  • Westlands Water District has named 20 local high school seniors as winners of its 2026 Senior Scholarship, marking 20 years of support for academic achievement. The district awarded the scholarships based on grades, leadership and community service to help students prepare for college (a milestone for local education).  KMJ Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The California Air Resources Board’s policies, including a 40-cent tax per gallon that funds cleaner vehicle standards, keep Fresno’s air better and help lower asthma risks in an area prone to high PM2.5 levels — without these measures, air quality could suffer.  KMPH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fresno County will implement new CalFresh work requirements on June 1, so adults aged 18 to 64 without dependents must prove they work, attend school, or volunteer to keep their benefits, with county officials assessing each case (to identify exemptions) as local food banks brace for increased demand.  ABC30

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Nearly $70 million in bond financing has been secured for The Park at South Stadium Apartments downtown, with escrow closed and a City Council review on June 18 — construction will begin in August and finish in summer, with 40 percent of 174 units affordable.  GV Wire

SPORTS NEWS

  • Fresno City College athletics enters a new era as head football coach Josh Brown and head soccer coach David Santesteban take over from longtime coaches Tony Caviglia and Eric Solberg (both known for decades-long success).
