COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fresno officials have revitalized Camp Fresno, a 35-acre historic camp near Dinkey Creek in the Sierra National Forest that has offered rustic cabins and tent sites since 1926. The camp had closed for repairs after deferred maintenance and a tree die-off but reopened recently (refreshed for summer heat).  KVPR

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday, June 1, a pickup truck hit power lines just south of Walnut Avenue near Lincoln when a semi disturbed additional wires, leaving multiple lines down and Lincoln Avenue closed from Walnut to Fruit while PG&E and ATT responded.  KMPH

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Fresno cardroom owner Kyle Kirkland applauded a 45-day court injunction that blocked enforcement of state rules banning blackjack, keeping his business model legal. The Attorney General’s Office will argue its case in court on June 30.  GV Wire

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fresno’s Art Deco-style Hall of Records opened in 1937 with funding from the Public Works Administration — it now stands as an iconic piece of local history listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  KVPR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Johnny Alvarado, a candidate for Fresno County Superintendent of Schools, is on paid administrative leave from Parlier Unified after ABC30 documents revealed he misrepresented his work history—his opponents now call for increased transparency.  GV Wire
  • Steve Ward was a longtime math teacher and cross country coach at Clovis Unified who impacted students and former athletes over a 43-year career — he passed away on May 28 and funeral services are pending.  GV Wire
  • Jermaine Whitehead, a seventh grader at Kastner Intermediate, saved a classmate who choked on gum and was honored with the Thunderbird Life Saving Award at a school assembly. The school recognized his quick thinking and praised his bravery as an example for students.  KMPH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A video shows a man trying to feed a bald eagle during his fishing trip at Pine Flat Lake on Sunday. There is no report of any official response to the unusual wildlife encounter.  KMPH
  • Southern California Edison warns that the Stevenson Falls bridge crossing is unsafe due to high water levels in the Sierra National Forest. Travelers from Fresno and Clovis should avoid the area since fast water flows make the crossing dangerous for the next three weeks.  KMPH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, CalFresh recipients in Fresno had to meet new federal requirements by showing proof of work, school, or community engagement & up to 40,000 residents risk losing benefits if they do not meet exemption criteria by their next renewal. Fresno County’s Department of Social Services will contact those affected.  ABC30
  • The High-Speed Rail Authority Board approved a $3.5 billion contract on Monday that selects three U.S.-based companies to begin laying track on 119 miles of rail. The board also moved Fresno and Hanford as potential sites for a heavy maintenance facility (expected to create 2,000 jobs).  GV Wire
  • CalFresh recipients who qualify as able-bodied adults without dependents will face new work or community engagement requirements at their next annual renewal starting Monday. County eligibility workers will explain if recipients must work, volunteer, or attend school or training to keep benefits.  KMPH
