Good morning, Fresno. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 5th of June.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 16-year-old accused of killing Caleb Quick on April 23 appeared in juvenile court where his defense argued for release over alleged victim assaults, but the judge ruled he remain in custody—further hearings are set for a settlement conference on July 8 at 8:30 a.m. and for a female alleged getaway driver on June 18. - ➤ Caleb Quick (18) was fatally shot outside a Clovis McDonald's when a 16-year-old suspect opened fire, and the suspect's attorney said the act may have been provoked by allegations that Quick committed sexual misconduct in multiple incidents. ABC30
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, Fresno expanded its Lawn-to-Garden Rebate Program to help residents and businesses replace lawns with drought-tolerant landscaping. Homeowners may get up to $3,000 and businesses up to $8,000—over 100 applications have already been submitted. ABC30
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fresno’s delayed street repairs have grown to over $1.2 billion and Mayor Jerry Dyer will propose a $100 million bond to fix roads over the next two to three years. Officials warn that acting now could keep future repair costs from rising closer to $2.5 billion — a price that would worsen without timely work. Fresnoland
- ➤ Today, Fresno officials put in new rules that will cut smoke shops from over 120 to 49 by limiting each council district to seven shops and adding strict location rules—such as keeping shops away from schools and parks; raids uncovered illegal products and many shop workers fear that up to 100 families will lose their jobs if shops close over the next 30 days and enforcement continues over the next 18 months. ABC30
- ➤ A federal judge ruled that Fresno’s new smoke shop regulations will take effect today, rejecting an emergency block request from the California Smoke Shops Association—shops must comply within 30 days and a preliminary injunction hearing is set for July 25. GV Wire
