COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday, protesters in Downtown Fresno chanted in Spanish and English to demand protection for long-time residents against immigration raids while local leaders from across the valley voiced support—organizers said another protest will occur on Saturday near Fashion Fair. This protest reflects the community’s call to uphold immigrant rights during heightened enforcement actions.  Your Central Valley

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday just after 10:30 p.m.—when three teens were on the Shaw and Marks bridge in Northwest Fresno trying to beat an approaching train—a teen fell and was struck, sustaining a non-life-threatening leg injury and is expected to recover.  KMJ Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Fresno County gave $2.7M from its American Rescue Plan grant to Community Health in August 2022 for a CT scanner and ICU beds—federal prosecutors later revealed the hospital submitted false claims as part of an alleged kickback scheme—raising concerns over proper use of taxpayer dollars.  GV Wire

CULTURE NEWS

  • On June 7, thousands gathered in the Tower District for the Pride Parade despite a 96° high — shuttles from Fresno City College and on-site water and cooling stations eased the heat. Rainbow Pride president Bryan Esparza estimated about 22,000 people attended — including roughly 2,500 parade participants and 1,000 Fresno Unified students.  The Collegian

ECONOMY NEWS

  • PG&E expanded its electric rate assistance program in Fresno County, now offering an 18% discount on electric rates for one and two-person households. Nearly 150,000 households may qualify based on income and size—around 29,000 homes are estimated to benefit from the new guidelines.  KMJ Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fresno County supervisors voted Tuesday to direct millions in state grant funds to an 88-unit affordable housing project in Sanger that will offer mental health support—22 of the units will be reserved for veterans. The project, managed with RH Community Builders under the Homekey+ program and costing about $37.9 million, is set for development at Cherry and DeWitt avenues.  The Business Journal
  • On this week's Fresnolandia Podcast, Laura Gromis—executive director of the U.S. Green Building Council of Central California and member of Fresno's Active Transportation Advisory Committee—talked about new plans to make streets safer for walkers and bikers using Fresno's Vision Zero plan.   • On Tuesday, Fresno Fire conducted controlled burns at the city’s wastewater facility in West Fresno to train firefighters for a busy wildfire season (using real-time strategies) while Battalion Chief Brian Price emphasized the risks (as firefighters had just battled a vegetation fire near homes).  Your Central Valley
