  • Pastor Jim Franklin of Cornerstone Community Care has led efforts in Fresno for over 30 years to fight hunger and homelessness by transforming a small pantry into a community center that offers weekly food distribution, school aid, clothing, and shower services+ The nonprofit relies on volunteers and local partnerships to help families face rising costs and food insecurity+  The Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Detectives reopened a decades-old homicide case after new fingerprint analysis identified the remains of Rene Perez (38 at the time of death) found near Tranquility in Fresno County in 1991, and they now ask anyone with information to contact the Cold Case Unit.  KMPH
  • Fresno police are asking for help identifying a suspect in a strong-arm robbery that occurred on May 17 at the 7-Eleven on North Blackstone Avenue (722) and urge anyone with information to call Detective Taylor Phoolkaat (559-621-6203).  Your Central Valley

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Madera County Sheriff Tyson Pogue declared an emergency on June 10 due to the spread of beet curly top virus, which has increased beet leafhopper numbers and jeopardized key crops. The measure allows growers to use restricted neonicotinoid pesticides for 60 days—an action approved by the county board.  The Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fresno County leaders and Transportation for All are meeting weekly to shape a single Measure C renewal that funds local transportation projects — leaders are working on fund distribution issues like road repairs and public transit while scheduling outreach meetings on June 18 at Big Red Church and June 23 at Betty Rodriguez Library. Outgoing FCTA Director Terry Ogle, who will leave next month for a project in southern California, said both sides hope to resolve differences by the end of summer.  GV Wire

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Heart Group broke ground on a new medical campus on May 22, 2025—located at Herndon and Peach avenues—to add more heart care for patients in Fresno. The campus, which will host several buildings and a wellness center, is expected to open Fall 2026.  The Business Journal
  • A study by the American Psychological Association shows that kids who spend more time on screens are more likely to have anxiety, depression and aggression—research that looked at nearly 300,000 children worldwide and included input from Dr. Annie Fujikawa at Ascend Behavior Health in Northeast Fresno. Dr. Fujikawa said families should set clear screen time limits to help children learn to manage their emotions.  ABC30
  • Clinica Sierra Vista and Central California Food Bank are hosting a free event at Elm Community Health Center (2740 S. Elm Ave.) this Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. that offers food, free haircuts, and rapid HIV testing with results under 20 minutes, and the first 50 attendees will receive a complimentary breakfast burrito (provided by Noble Credit Union).  GV Wire
