COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Protesters will gather at several locations in Fresno on Saturday as part of the national No Kings Day movement to oppose what organizers say is authoritarian politics—rally times include 9 a.m. at Cary Park and 10 a.m. at other designated sites, with Fresno Police ready to secure the areas while events coincide with a military parade in Washington, D.C. marking the Army’s 250th anniversary and other national commemorations.  GV Wire
  • Virginia Kevorkian turned 100 on June 12 when she celebrated with family and friends at the OASIS Adult Day Program (hosted by Valley Caregiver Resource Center) in Fresno. The nonprofit said its facility on Fresno and Barstow avenues (expanding by fall) will add new areas for seniors to enjoy.  The Business Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire destroyed a home on a cul-de-sac on Capitola Avenue near Gates Avenue in Northwest Fresno early Thursday morning, displacing eight people including four children as firefighters used a ladder to pour water on the flames after a roof collapse.  ABC30

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fresno Unified School Board approved $22.9 million in upgrades to be completed over summer vacation—from installing new HVAC systems and playground equipment to adding ADA compliant features—at several campuses while the district monitors contractors amid wage theft concerns. The Department of Labor will be consulted to ensure fair practices during the renovations.  GV Wire

  • Fresno City Council President Mike Karbassi said he wants to create an election integrity unit at the City Attorney’s Office to enforce campaign finance laws after a messy special election in March. His plan needs $120,000 in funds from Mayor Jerry Dyer’s revised budget later this month—he noted he never questioned his long-time political consultant about the mailers.  Fresnoland
  • On June 12th, Derek Carr & his wife Heather Carr received a proclamation at Fresno City Hall for their sports and community contributions after his retirement from an 11-year NFL career, marking a homecoming to the Valley. The council also honored retired TV journalist Rich Rodriguez while discussing immigration tensions and approving donated office furniture from a state agency.  GV Wire
  • A Fresno councilmember said that ICE will conduct a massive immigration raid at the Cherry Auction this Saturday, which caused worry among immigrant families, but both the auction and city officials say there is no planned raid. Local law enforcement also urged the public not to spread unverified information—misidentifications of law enforcement vehicles have added to the confusion.  KMPH
  • Today, Fresno City Council approved a Tower District Vacant Building Pilot Program that requires owners of long-vacant commercial properties to register their assets, submit a vacancy plan, and maintain minimum standards—failure to comply will lead to penalties over the next 18 months.  KMPH
