COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Protesters are gathering in multiple locations in Fresno today for No Kings Day—an international protest organized by the 50501 Movement to oppose authoritarian actions and support democracy. In Fresno, the main rally begins at 9 a.m. at Cary Park with additional events starting at 10 a.m. at Shaw and Fresno avenues and Blackstone and Nees avenues, while police are set to ensure safety.  GV Wire

CRIME NEWS

  • Teen dating violence is rising in Fresno as 45 teens sought help from the Marjaree Mason Center in May and police responded to 234 domestic violence calls involving teens this year—local school programs now teach healthy relationship skills and the center offers legal aid, counseling and crisis support.  GV Wire
  • Nickey Stane was sentenced to life in prison without parole in a Fresno County courtroom after pleading guilty to 12 felony counts including the 1996 murder of Fresno State student Debbie Dorian and multiple sexual assaults—DNA evidence from a separate Visalia case linked him to the crimes.  KMJ Now
  • Fresno police said 33-year-old Nicholas Bolanos was shot and killed Thursday evening near Griffith Way and Hughes Avenue when officers responded to a six-round ShotSpotter activation at 6:51 p.m.—homicide detectives are interviewing witnesses and searching for leads with no arrests made.  GV Wire
  • A Fresno County ordinance to crack down on copper wire theft has cut thefts by 82% by lowering incidents from between 10 and 15 weekly to fewer than 10 monthly. County leaders will meet with investigators from nearby counties to share their strategy and help prevent further losses.  KMPH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fresno State University is matching $25,000 in scholarship funds to 25 Bulldog Bound students—each will receive $500 per semester for full-time tuition through a partnership with The Foundation for Fresno Unified Students. Fresno Unified awarded a record $441,200 to 333 graduates, marking the largest amount in district history.  GV Wire

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its June 12 meeting, the Fresno City Council approved housing measures to ease building restrictions and update zoning codes—steps aimed at restoring Prohousing status—and postponed a controversial ministerial ordinance alongside a proposed Elm Avenue rezone. The council also allocated funding for a local senior center project and HVAC work at the Maxie L. Parks community center—moves that support community service improvements.  Fresnoland

  • A new modular, youth-focused housing development will open on Monday at the corner of Sierra and Polk in Fresno to provide safe housing for at-risk young people, including former foster youth.
