  • Fresno residents will gather at Sunnyside High School on Saturday, June 28 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. to raise funds for teen Gabriel Garcia Jr. who is battling chemo-resistant cancer—organizers including West Coast Inc. Barbershop and local leaders have planned car washes, taco plates, and free haircuts to help cover the cost of his new treatment.  Your Central Valley
  • Clovis will host its annual July 4 Freedom Fest at Lamonica Stadium on the campus of Clovis High School starting at 5 p.m.—the event will feature fireworks, games and activities for children, a Food Fair, a Crafter’s Fair, music and other entertainment. Tickets cost $5 per person and children five and under enter free, and they can be purchased in advance at Valley First Credit Union on West Herndon Ave or at the stadium starting at 9 a.m. on July 4.  Your Central Valley

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Tuesday, June 25th, the Armenian Museum of Fresno opened a dual exhibition called Fresno Armenians: 50 Years Ago + From the Fields of Fresno at the University of California Center at 550 E. Shaw Avenue. The show features over 300 photographs from the 1970s and a sound installation that honors local Armenian heritage, and it will run until August 27 with free public admission.  KMJ Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A wildfire started overnight in Fresno County near Jacalitos Creek Road west of Lost Hills Road—raising to 520 acres with 0% containment—and crews face steep terrain challenges as they work to control the blaze and investigate its cause.  KMPH

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fresno County officials reported the first detection of West Nile Virus in mosquito samples this year and advised residents to practice the Three Ds (Deter, Dawn and Dusk, Drain) to reduce mosquito bites and lower infection risk.  Your Central Valley
  • Family HealthCare Network opened its new Fresno Olive health center on Monday at 5166 E. Olive Ave. and now offers family medicine, pediatrics, and dentistry while accepting walk-in appointments; the center is open Monday through Friday (8 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and Saturday (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.).  Your Central Valley

  • Fresno native Cedric Coward was picked 11th overall in the NBA Draft Wednesday night in Brooklyn—he was first chosen by the Portland Trail Blazers before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in a deal that included a 16th pick, a future first-round pick and two second-round picks.
