Good morning, Fresno. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of July.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews responded to nearly 150 fires on July 4th in Fresno and Clovis, including one blaze in a Clovis home that displaced Jeanine Smith and her 89-year-old mother. Fresno Fire added three engines to handle the high call volume and used a mapping tool to guide responses — the American Red Cross assisted 20 people across four counties — and officials urged residents to turn in leftover fireworks for safe disposal.  KMJ Now
  • A mobile home on Olive and Jackson caught fire just after 7:30 a.m. Monday in central Fresno, displacing two adults and two children—firefighters quickly put out the blaze with no injuries reported.  ABC30

CRIME NEWS

  • Fresno police arrested Jershawn Worthy for his connection to two shootings that left two victims treated and led to the recovery of a semi-automatic firearm with an extended magazine — one incident occurred on April 11 near Ashlan and Chestnut avenues and another near Sierra Vista and Turner avenues on July 6.  GV Wire
  • A burglar broke into KVX Bridal & Beauty at 4 a.m. Sunday by shattering the glass door with a rock and stealing thousands in beauty products before riding away on his bicycle—Fresno police are still searching for him as owner Kathy Xiong said she feels violated and plans to upgrade her security system.  Your Central Valley
  • A 16-year-old boy accused of fatally shooting Caleb Quick appeared in court Tuesday morning as his defense dropped its claim linking the victim to alleged sexual assaults—prosecutors argued the murder was an execution and the judge ordered him to remain in custody pending a transfer hearing on Aug. 25 at 8:30 a.m.  GV Wire
  • A 23-year-old Fresno woman, Malakeh Ghaleb Jaber, was sentenced on Tuesday to 10 years and 4 months in state prison after pleading guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated for a 2021 crash on Aug. 7 that killed one passenger and injured three others when her car hit a light pole on Chestnut Avenue.  GV Wire

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Fresno County Board of Supervisors approved an ordinance that introduces new dog licensing fees and breeding permits to crack down on illegal breeding. Breeders must pay $50 per dog for a background check (the permit costs $2,000 per dog per year) and face fines and possible jail time for repeat violations, while pet owners charged $78 per year for unsprayed or unneutered dogs and only $4 for spayed or neutered ones.  KMJ Now
  • A burst hot water pipe flooded the jury room at Fresno County Courthouse Monday—triggering an emergency evacuation for hundreds as firefighters worked with industrial vacuums. Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig said a break in a hot water line to a valve has raised concerns about needed plumbing upgrades in Courthouse Park.  KMJ Now
  • Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer and city officials broke ground yesterday on a new 911 dispatch facility in Downtown Fresno—designed to replace an outdated basement center with risks from asbestos and poor air conditioning. The $19 million project, supported by $2 million from the Office of Emergency services, will add at least a dozen dispatchers and is set to be completed in fall.  ABC30

HEALTH NEWS

  • A year ago in June 2024, a botulism outbreak from home-canned cactus called nopales during family events in Caruthers and Clovis led to eight people receiving antitoxin.
