ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An investigation into the Mission Thrift store fire on Sierra Avenue found the blaze was accidental—firefighters arrived around 1:00 p.m. on July 27th and spent more than five hours with nearly 40 firefighters extinguishing the flames.  KMPH

CRIME NEWS

  • A 26-year-old Mexican national, Miguel Obed Romero Reyes, was sentenced to over four years in federal prison after a Fresno County traffic stop on Interstate 5 uncovered more than 200,000 fentanyl pills in a duffel bag, and authorities said he picked up the pills in Arizona to transport them to Washington—investigators included the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations.  GV Wire
  • A new state law called Proposition 36 has cut smash-and-grab retail thefts at River Park by over 50% in the past seven months—some critics worry the tougher penalties may lead to more jail time and slower court processes.  ABC30
  • On Saturday morning, Aug. 2, a 70-year-old family friend named Carl Johnson was fatally shot during an argument with 46-year-old Stewart Coleman at a yard sale near North Cleo Avenue and West Roberts and police later arrested Coleman after recovering the firearm.  KMPH

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Farmers in the Central Valley have faced a rodent invasion that has damaged crops, trees, and irrigation systems. The Fresno County Farm Bureau reported repair costs have soared—damages are estimated at between $110 million and $300 million as farmers use traps and pest control chemicals to fight the crisis.  KMPH

HEALTH NEWS

  • Valley Children's Hospital issued a safety alert to school districts and athletic programs after doctors treated more than a dozen young football players for severe nasal fractures this summer. The hospital advised that players avoid contact drills without facial protection — urging coaches and families to ensure proper equipment and hydration during practices.  KMPH

  • Hanley Investment Group Real Estate Advisors sold a 7,502-square-foot retail pad in River Oak Plaza for $4.6M—its tenants include Dutch Bros Coffee, West Coast Sourdough, WaBa Grill, Sports Clips, and Organic Nails and Spa. The property, located at Herndon and Brawley avenues with 54,000 cars passing daily, adds to Fresno’s growing retail market.  The Business Journal
