Good morning, Fresno. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 8th of August.

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 16th, around 5 p.m. in Fowler, deputies responded to a report of a robbery shooting near Temperance and Adams Avenues and found 19-year-old Diego Diaz with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, but investigation revealed that Diaz and his friend Joseph Garcia had staged the incident—leading to potential charges for filing a false police report and negligently discharging a firearm.  KMPH
  • A federal grand jury indicted Fresno man Miguel Dorantes—also known as Miguel Castro—on three counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of transferring obscene material to a minor, alleging that he used three minors to create explicit content between November 2021 and May 2025.  KMPH
  • Fresno man Zyad Alsaid, 64, was sentenced Thursday to 25 years to life plus an extra year after he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for fatally stabbing 32-year-old Matthew Chavez outside the Vista Turning Point facility in central Fresno in 2019—he had been originally charged with murder.  KMPH
  • Salvador Reyna, 44, was sentenced to 53 years to life in state prison on Wednesday at Superior Court for sexually abusing three minors between fall 2008 and summer 2014 — he will be eligible for parole after serving at least 20 years.  ABC30

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fresno Judge Arlan Harrell has been appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to join the 5th District Court of Appeal and replace retiring Justice Charles Poochigian—he has served on the Superior Court bench since 2006. Fresno attorney Jim Trevino has also been named to the Kings County Superior Court bench to replace retiring Randy Edwards.  GV Wire
  • Fresno is starting nearly 30 road projects to repave and improve streets with a $34 million investment — crews have planned work on over 49 miles of roads on key corridors such as Cesar Chavez, McKinley and Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards. The work is funded by local bonds and state gas tax funds to fix long-standing pothole issues.  ABC30
  • Fresno Future Forward revealed it borrowed $4,439.51 from Blue Horsehoe Agency—whose address is shared with several companies managed by its treasurer, Alex Tavlian—which has no record in local public filings. Researchers say the use of one address for multiple companies raises questions about how political funds are moved in Fresno.  Fresnoland
