  • Keryn Nicholson turned her hat-making hobby into a custom hat shop on Van Ness Avenue nearly two years ago, serving agriculture clients locally and receiving orders from across the nation. She plans to move to a larger space and hire an assistant next year as she adjusts prices to rising material costs—continuing Fresno’s Western tradition.  The Business Journal

  • A Fresno County jury on Tuesday, August 19 at 7:06 p.m. did not reach a verdict in the trial of Damion Salinas—accused of shooting Joshua Thao following an argument at a crash site.  ABC30

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marco Tovar has launched JoyStick Vending—an art-filled machine that dispenses Fresno-themed items inside Goldstein’s Mortuary and Deli in the Tower District. The machine, which opened two weeks ago, now sells over 200 items such as enamel pins, switchblade combs, and photo prints while giving 70% of revenue to local artists.  Fresnoland

  • Today, Yoto introduced an audio platform that gives kids an immersive experience with games, reading, writing, music, and art to help reduce screen time as school begins. The device is designed to boost creative skills and offer an engaging alternative to screens.  ABC30

  • Sam 'Psalm' Behpoor managed Pismo's in northwest Fresno for 10 years until he was detained by ICE on June 23—he is held at Mesa Verde ICE detention center in Bakersfield while his family and lawyers work to reopen his path to citizenship.  ABC30
  • On this week's Fresnolandia podcast, hosts Jordan and Danielle spoke with reporters Julianna Morano and Pablo Orihuela about renewing Measure C and naming the new Southeast Fresno park—topics they further discussed along with a police headquarters leasing deal, a $56 million public safety bond, and Supervisor Garry Bredefeld’s role in addressing culture wars.  Fresnoland

HEALTH NEWS

  • Adventist Health Hanford in Kings County received a $1 million donation from Valley Strong Credit Union to expand its heart procedure lab. The expansion is part of a $40 million project that will add four labs by the end of 2027—improving heart care for local patients.  ABC30
  • Madera County Animal Services confirmed an outbreak of canine distemper in the Fresno River area and urged pet owners to vaccinate their dogs and monitor them closely, warning that unvaccinated or symptomatic pets should avoid communal areas + contact with wildlife.  KMPH
