ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters prevented major damage when a kitchen fire started at an empty home on the 1600 block of East Cambridge Avenue just after 10 a.m. Saturday, and officials say the cause is under investigation with no injuries reported.  KMPH

CRIME NEWS

  • A driver was arrested on DUI charges after a car veered off Fowler Avenue, plowed through a fence—hitting a freeway barrier near Highway 99 in Fowler on Saturday.  KMPH
  • Fresno police fatally shot a 35-year-old man armed with knives Saturday after he charged officers during a standoff at a west Fresno apartment complex.  GV Wire
  • Today, Fresno restaurant manager Psalm Behpoor of Pismo’s Coastal Grill was detained by ICE on a decades-old charge he already served, and the community is urged to email letters of support as friends launch a GoFundMe campaign to help his family.  KMPH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Garnet Fire started on Sunday afternoon near Rodger’s Ridge and burned 3,338 acres in eastern Fresno County, prompting mandatory evacuations for zones K27, K30, and K31 — residents in zone K29 received warnings as firefighters worked to slow its spread.  ABC30

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers will vote in September on SB 68 that would require restaurants to list menu items containing nine common allergens—such as peanuts, shellfish, and tree nuts—to better protect people with severe allergies. If approved and signed, the law will take effect on July 1 while restaurant groups warn it could raise operating costs.  KMPH
  • U.S. Congressman Jim Costa awarded medals to veterans who served in WWII and the Korean War at the Veterans Home of California in Fresno on Saturday — a long-awaited recognition for their service. The ceremony honored men and women who had waited for official thanks.  KMPH

  • NAMI Fresno held its Night of Hope Dinner at Fort Washington Country Club on Saturday to support mental health awareness— the event featured live music, dinner, and both live and silent auctions for guests over 21.  KMPH

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Fresno State Bulldogs lost 31-7 to Kansas in their season opener after scoring only one touchdown on the opening drive and struggling with turnovers from quarterback E.J. Warner. Head Coach Matt Entz said the team will bounce back when they face Georgia Southern next Saturday—Aug 30 at 6:30 p.m.— at Valley Children’s Stadium.  The Collegian
