CRIME NEWS

  • A federal judge ruled that the lawsuit filed by the family of Kenneth Mullins, an unarmed homeless man shot at a wrecking yard southwest of Fresno in 2020 by two reserve sheriff’s deputies, will go to trial in early October to decide if the deputies violated his 4th and 14th Amendment rights—potentially leading to significant civil damages.  GV Wire

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire officials said that the Garnet Fire in the Sierra National Forest grew to 17,561 acres and reached 8% containment on Saturday—air crews made water drops to help ground crews box the blaze amid steep terrain. They said they plan another press release on Monday.  KMPH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • California regulators voted on Friday to pause a plan to penalize oil companies if profits rise too high, saying the move is meant to protect consumers at the pump. The penalty will not take effect until at least 2030 and the decision comes as two oil refineries announced closure plans (covering about 18 percent of the state's refining capacity), while commission leaders maintain that climate goals will remain unchanged.  KMPH
  • Fresno County Clerk James Kus said the county needs 50 extra election workers for the November 4 special election on redistricting and that these workers will support in-person voting, IT, and office tasks. Applications must be submitted online by Sept 5 before 4 p.m.—bilingual skills and student status may offer extra benefits for future elections.  GV Wire
  • Governor Gavin Newsom announced a new statewide task force to dismantle unsafe encampments in California’s ten largest cities including Fresno— the team will work with local officials to clear state property and connect individuals to housing, shelter, mental health and substance use services within the next 30 days.  KMPH

  • Fresno State coach Mat Entz earned his first win when the Bulldogs defeated Georgia Southern 42-14 on Aug 30 at Valley Children’s Hospital Stadium—both offensive and defensive lines performed well and senior quarterback E.J.
