Good morning, Fresno. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 9th of September.

CRIME NEWS

  • A 15-year-old boy was arrested Sunday after he stole alcohol, fired a gun, and attempted a carjacking at Vons on North Cedar Avenue — officers responded at 9:23 a.m. and booked him into the Fresno County Juvenile Justice Campus.  GV Wire
  • Fresno police arrested 22 drivers on suspicion of DUI at a checkpoint held on Sept. 6 at Clovis and Lamona avenues—officers also cited 13 drivers for operating vehicles without proper licensing while checking 541 vehicles, and a saturation patrol is scheduled for Sept. 13.  GV Wire

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The California Department of Food and Agriculture Office of Farm to Fork announced it will award $13.75 million to 12 groups to create or expand community food hubs in counties such as Fresno — with the grants planned to boost local farming, food access, and climate resilience. The funding will support small- and mid-scale farmers and Tribal-led organizations as they develop business plans and logistics for new and existing food hubs.  KMJ Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Garnet Fire in the Sierra National Forest grew to nearly 80 square miles by Aug. 26 as 2,226 firefighters built containment lines, used strategic firing, and dropped fire retardant—forcing evacuation orders for areas near Tollhouse and Shaver Lake. Firefighters worked to slow the fire's aggressive spread with aerial support and resource shifts while managing rising spot fires.  KMPH
  • The Salt 14-2 Fire started Sept 2 near Jacalitos Creek Road in Coalinga and has burned 25,580 acres across Fresno and Monterey counties while remaining 35% contained. Firefighters with 1,679 personnel are building control lines and enforcing evacuation orders and road closures as winds are expected to increase later.  GV Wire

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fresno County residents gave detailed feedback to Transportation for All on the need for better neighborhood roads near parks, schools and community centers, more reliable transit stops, and improved sidewalks. The coalition held a news conference yesterday—drawing on over 4,500 responses—while Fresno COG will soon set recommendations for the next Measure C before it expires in 2027.  Fresnoland
  • Councilmember Tyler Maxwell said Fresno’s Eviction Protection Program should not require income verification for tenants facing illegal evictions because the current intake process already helps those in need. He will propose exempting the program from Local Housing Trust Fund restrictions at the City Council meeting on Thursday—arguing that extra checks could delay critical help for people at risk of losing their homes.  Fresnoland
