COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dozens gathered Sunday night at New Covenant Community Church in northeast Fresno to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot last week at an event at Utah Valley University. Pastor Jim Franklin led the prayer vigil and said Kirk was known for his call for unity while police ensured the event remained peaceful.  ABC30

  • Fresno State welcomed Human Jukebox at a battle of the bands event on campus where students enjoyed live music & The Collegian’s photo essay captured the spirited performance.  The Collegian
  • Fiestas Patrias was held in Downtown Fresno to honor Hispanic Heritage Month and celebrate Latin American cultural heritage (including Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Chile). Organizers held the event despite rising concerns over deportation raids.  KMPH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • California lawmakers passed Assembly Bill 1454, known as the Evidence-Based Early Literacy Bill, with a unanimous 38–0 vote on Saturday—this bill uses proven methods to improve reading skills and now awaits Governor Newsom’s signature. The measure updates teacher training and classroom materials to help at-risk students close the literacy gap.  KMPH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Forest Service reported Sunday morning that the Garnet Fire in mountainous eastern Fresno County is 69% contained—up from Friday’s 37%—with some evacuation orders lifted while others remain active. The lightning-caused fire burned 58,905 acres and nearly 3,100 personnel are working to contain it, and it is expected to spread north over the next two days.  GV Wire

  • Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer threatened to block candidate AJ Rassamni’s emails after he repeatedly contacted city officials about the homeless removal policy instead of using the proper channels—on September 9 the city sent a cease and desist letter alleging his messages interfered with officials’ duties and Rassamni maintained his emails represented local Blackstone merchants and residents.  The San Joaquin Valley Sun

  • Fresno State Bulldogs beat Southern University Jaguars 56 to 7 on Sept. 13 at Valley Children’s Stadium. Coach Matt Entz — who said the team would enjoy the win until Monday morning — said the Bulldogs will meet soon to plan for upcoming Mountain West Conference games.  The Collegian
