  • The San Joaquin Valley Housing Collaborative held its 14th annual Affordable Housing Summit last week in downtown Fresno where nearly 350 people participated in 15 workshops and listened to a keynote by USC professor Manuel Pastor—addressing rising housing challenges amid federal and state funding cuts and shelter closures. Local leaders urged more community collaboration to help lower income families secure stable housing.  Fresnoland
  • Rosalinda Acosta, Fresno County deputy chief probation officer, is honored during Hispanic Heritage Month for her 35 years of service in supporting the justice system and helping about 200 youth on probation. She credits her large family and mentors for her success and continues to guide young officers while caring for her two dogs—her dedication to community service remains strong.  KMPH

  • A local group has spent over five years planning the exclusive PM Lounge, a members-only social club set to open on Oct 28 in north Fresno.   • Dozens gathered Sunday night at New Covenant Community Church in northeast Fresno to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot last week at Utah Valley University—led by Cornerstone Church Senior Pastor Jim Franklin—while police maintained peace.  KMJ Now

  • At Woodward Park on Monday, a 92-year-old Fresno woman had her birthday wish fulfilled when Pitbull performed her favorite song 'Fireball' for a large crowd—her family arranged VIP tickets so she could get his autograph and photos.  ABC30
  • On Sunday, Fulton Street in Fresno came alive with music, traditional dances, and cheers during the annual Fiestas Patrias festival where about 1,000 residents and visitors celebrated independence and heritage—local groups and officials expressed pride amid concerns over immigration fears.  The Collegian

  • A Fresno State lecturer has been placed on leave after making inappropriate remarks about Charlie Kirk’s death in a circulating video—Fresno State launched an immediate investigation and condemned the comments as against its values.  KMPH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials said the Garnet Fire burned 59,531 acres—93 square miles—and was 71% contained as of Monday, with about 3,000 firefighters working to control it. They reported that 108 people were evacuated, 11 were injured, and 300 structures remained threatened while warmer, drier weather is expected later this week.  KMPH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. David Valadao praised the USDA's $1B disaster recovery program designed to help livestock producers hit by floods and wildfires in 2023 and 2024. Producers can apply for relief—applications are open until Oct. 31 after sign-up began on Sept. 15.  The Business Journal
  • A federal judge ruled on Sep. 11 in favor of Fresno against the CSSA, letting the city move forward with its ordinance to limit smoke shop numbers and ban them within 1,000 feet of schools and day cares. The city may enforce the rules now even though the case will go to trial next year—no shop will receive special treatment.  The San Joaquin Valley Sun
  • Friant contractors, the City of Fresno, and local farmers have asked the Supreme Court to review a water rights case that began during the 2014 drought, arguing that the government cut water without fair pay. Attorneys say the petition was filed on Sept. 9 and that if the court accepts it, the Bureau of Reclamation will have 30 days to reply — a move that could change water rights rules.  GV Wire

  • Medical experts in Fresno say poor air quality from wildfire smoke and haze is causing coughing, itchy eyes, and nasal drainage—residents are advised to limit time outdoors, rinse off before bed, and change air filters to reduce exposure.  ABC30
