COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dr. Ashish Jha, one of Fortune Magazine’s 'World’s 50 Greatest Leaders', will kick off the Town Hall season today at the Paul Shaghoian Concert Hall on Clovis North High School campus with a street party starting at 5 p.m.—featuring food and music. He will address climate change as a public health crisis and explain how extreme heat and air pollution are affecting our community.  GV Wire

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Academy of Financial Education started a 12-class program in Fresno that teaches youth and adults about savings, smart investments, cryptocurrency, and behavioral finance—helping families build good money habits early.  ABC30
  • Over 3,000 Fresno Unified students attended the Latino College Expo at the Fresno Convention Center on Wednesday morning where more than 50 colleges, universities, trade schools, military options and informational booths helped them learn about college choices. The expo focused on raising college awareness among Latino students and marked the second year Fresno Unified partnered with the National College Resource Foundation—opening paths for future learning.  ABC30
  • Alice Feng, a student at Granite Ridge Intermediate School in Fresno, was named as one of the finalists in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, a STEM contest — her project used cold-pressed grape seed oil to help local wine growers. The finalists from 10 states and Puerto Rico will travel to Washington, D.C., from Oct. 24 to Oct. 29 — competing for more than $100,000 in awards.  KMPH
  • The Wonderful Company announced Wednesday that its Wonderful Community Scholarship program expanded to serve students in Avenal, Firebaugh, Wasco and Shafter by offering up to $12,000 over four years — a boost for first-generation college students. Eligible 12th graders were to be contacted by their schools by mid-September.  The Business Journal

FINANCE NEWS

  • PG&E will add a climate credit to eligible customers' bills in October—most will receive a credit of just over $58. The credit is part of the state's Cap and Trade Program aimed at cutting carbon emissions.  ABC30

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman Jim Costa, the only Fresno State alumnus in Congress, has supported his university by endowing the Maddy Institute and launching a Washington internship program that offers local students Capitol Hill experience. He also helped secure funds for Head Start and water programs that support local families — showing his commitment to education and the community.  The Collegian
  • Fresno Yosemite International Airport will receive over $12 million from FAA funds to repair runways, signage and lighting on 9500 feet of its paved runway — a grant announced by Senators Padilla and Schiff as part of a $168 million package for 46 California airports.  ABC30
  • Fresno County Supervisors approved a $5.3 billion budget Monday that cuts major department funding by 5%—leading to planned changes in social services. County officials said CalFresh work requirements will start in January while Medi-Cal changes are expected to affect thousands, with more details coming soon.  GV Wire
  • Federal Judge Kirk Sherriff denied the request by Fresno smoke shop owners to block new rules after records showed 63 of 67 shops had violated key regulations — a trial on the case is set for Jan. 5, 2027.  GV Wire

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, a group of West Coast states left the CDC rules and made their own vaccine advice for COVID-19, the flu, and RSV. California governor Gavin Newsom signed a law giving the state power to set its own immunization schedules — a measure taken after disagreements with federal health officials.  ABC30

  • Ray Dennison got a head injury during a 1955 football game that led to his death and sparked debates over paying college athletes—a fight that ended with a $2.8 billion settlement that changed NCAA rules. Fresno State Athletics now tests a new revenue-sharing plan through its Valley Co-Op fund linked to local agriculture.  The Collegian
