  • Close to 200 people gathered on Fresno State campus Wednesday night to honor slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk with candles and flowers—students discussed his stance on free speech and its limits.  KMJ Now
  • The Fresno Fire Department’s explorer program gives young people hands-on training in firefighting—providing them with skills and a first step toward careers in service. Recruitment opens in the spring for youths aged 15 to 20, with experienced firefighters mentoring as they train.  ABC30

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New data from the state Department of Food and Agriculture shows California reached a record production of over $61 billion in 2024—up 3.6 percent from previous years, with dairy, almonds and grapes among the top products.  ABC30
  • Less than two months after breaking ground on July 30, Indianapolis-based Scannell Properties found its first tenant for the Westgate Industrial Center in Fresno — marking renewed market momentum — as the unnamed tenant will lease 248,786 square feet of industrial office and warehouse space with the building planned for completion around June 2026.  The Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Wednesday’s ASI meeting at Fresno State, the senate named Nellie Chobanyan as parking and transportation senator while campus groups shared ideas on student programs and campus safety. Leaders discussed plans like a parking app and more shuttle services, and they reported a $100,000 budget surplus + highlighted student suggestions.  The Collegian
  • More than 11% of Californians with student loans fell behind on payments after relief ended, and over 16% of borrowers in the Central Valley were delinquent due to fewer job opportunities—raising concerns about growing financial stress. The California Policy Lab report noted that older borrowers faced the highest struggles as repayment resumed.  The Business Journal
  • A study by the Public Policy Center of California shows that English learners in Fresno schools are expected to improve their performance by the end of the decade as districts test new strategies such as EL Bootcamps and adaptive lesson plans. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Avocado Lake Park reopened Thursday morning after serving as a base for fire crews fighting the Garnet Fire that burned nearly 60,000 acres since August 24th — the crews moved to Harlan Camp in Clovis once containment reached 89%, and county officials urged residents to enjoy the park for recreation.  GV Wire

  • On Sept. 10, the state Department of Water Resources held a workshop in Delano to warn farmers that over-pumping groundwater is making land sink and hurting canals like the Friant-Kern Canal—water managers must now deliver firm plans to cut pumping and recharge aquifers. Public comments on these new guidelines will be accepted until Sept. 22.  GV Wire

  • Local Realtors say Fresno housing remains stable despite a study showing a 21% rise in outbound home searches since 2019. Rising home prices and changing job patterns have kept the market affordable, experts said.  The Business Journal

  • Today and Saturday, top sprint car drivers will race at Tulare Thunderbowl in the Dennis Roth Classic where the feature winner will earn $83K and meat awards—this event honors the legacy of Roth Motorsports co-owners Dennis and Teresa Roth.   • Fresno State Hockey Club is back under new general manager Torrance Carpenter after years of financial struggles.
