Good morning, Fresno. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 22nd of September.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Horn Photo is Fresno’s only brick-and-mortar store for cameras and has served local photographers since 1937 — it rents, sells, develops film, and hosts free photo walks to help beginners learn — while boosting the local photography community.  The Collegian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Department of Education announced earlier this month that it will end several Minority-Serving Institution grant programs, including those for Hispanic-Serving Institutions, leaving Fresno State to face uncertain funding as some campus programs did not receive their refunds. Faculty say delays in federally allocated funds may affect first-generation and low-income students and threaten support for immigrant and Latino youth.  The Collegian
  • Fresno State's Economics Student Association has been relaunched to help students study economic and political topics and to offer career and academic opportunities—faculty have worked to restart the club. It meets weekly and will hold its next meeting on Sept. 24 at the Family and Food Science Building Room 212A where Professor Delia Cholokian will talk about internships.  The Collegian

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Garnet Fire burned almost 60,000 acres over four weeks and is now in a new phase after recent rainfall lowered active flames—firefighters returned on Saturday to mop up while a New York City team will take control on Sunday. Officials note that dangerous hotspots remain and could smolder for weeks until further rain curbs the dead fuels.  KMJ Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fresno County Supervisor Luis Chavez responded on Instagram to Los Angeles Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado after she mocked Fresno by wrongly claiming that Shakira ended her world tour in the city—Chavez urged her to focus on local issues and praised Fresno for hosting the sold-out concert while supplying fresh produce to Angelenos.  The San Joaquin Valley Sun
  • A complaint filed Sunday alleged that a secret advisory committee linked to FresnoCOG misused $2 million in tax dollars to lower the vote threshold for Measure C renewal so special interests could shape the road tax, and the filing stated the group held meetings in July and violated California open meeting and public records laws—raising concerns over potential misuse of taxpayer funds.  The San Joaquin Valley Sun

SPORTS NEWS

  • David Gravel won the Dennis Roth Classic drag race at Tulare Thunderbowl on Saturday night — edging Spencer Bayston by .021 seconds. He told the crowd 'suck it' as boos erupted while he praised the track and local support for sprint car racing.  GV Wire
  • On Saturday, the Fresno State Bulldogs beat the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 23-21 in a Mountain West Conference game as linebacker K’Vion Thunderbird made a 59-yard pick-six with 5:20 left in the fourth quarter—his play earned the Bulldogs their first win in Hawaii since 2019. The team will have a bye week before hosting Nevada on Oct. 4 at Valley Children’s Stadium.  The Collegian
