  • Over 30 protestors gathered in Fresno on Monday outside ABC 30 to protest Disney for canceling Jimmy Kimmel’s show, expressing concerns over free speech. Disney announced the show will resume airing today after discussions with Kimmel—local citizens remain alert for further corporate accountability.  Fresnoland

  • The community held a heartfelt vigil Monday for 10-year-old Corday Brown—who died in a car accident on Sunday—as his father, Cortney Brown, recently diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, received support from local groups and his son's football team while expressing pride in his boy's life.  KMPH

  • The owner of the Bobby Salazar’s eatery in northeast Fresno announced on Sunday that the business will drop the Salazar brand and change its name to Mama Iguana’s to avoid declining sales and negative comments after federal arson charges were filed against Robert Salazar; the family business of 24 years will complete rebranding (by Nov. 17).  The Business Journal

  • Saturday's performative male contest at Judging by the Cover bookstore in Fresno's Chinatown drew over 150 locals and 33 contestants—spilled matcha and tampons scattered across the floor.   • At a conference on Sept. 18th, experts said Fresno needed to speed up its approval process for manufacturing projects because long reviews and lawsuits had kept businesses like Busseto Foods from building here.   • Fresno County Board of Supervisors will discuss a new policy today at 9:30 a.m. that limits backyard roosters to 10 per property and allows up to 24 with an approved application & fees, while also imposing penalties for violations and addressing issues like cock fighting and inhumane treatment, with a second hearing set for Oct. 7 and the law set to go into effect early November if approved.  Fresnoland
  • Former West Park Elementary trustee and small business owner Fernando Alvarez launched his campaign for Fresno City Council District 3 over the weekend—he positions himself as a public safety advocate for working families in southwest Fresno and secured endorsements from former County Supervisor Henry Perea and Fresno Chamber of Commerce President Scott Miller.  The San Joaquin Valley Sun
  • Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 49 and SB 98 to keep immigration agents off school campuses without a court order and require schools to let families know if agents are present.   • Retired Fresno County Sheriff Steve Magarian died at 82. Born in Fresno, he started his law enforcement career in 1966 and rose through the ranks to lead improvements like a new jail system and a helicopter program—he is survived by his wife Joanne and two daughters.  KMPH

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Fresno County Department of Public Health confirmed Monday Fresno County's first West Nile virus fatality of 2025 in Fresno and reported five additional cases with more expected through October. The health officer urged local residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites — as the virus spreads when mosquitoes bite infected birds and can cause severe symptoms.  The Business Journal

  • Fresno State's Pickleball Club, started in 2023 by engineering student Nicholas Wise, has grown into a vibrant community with over 120 on its social team and weekly Pickleball After Dark events—open to students and locals. The competitive team practices at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center and will travel in October for collegiate tournaments after winning regional meets.  The Collegian
