Good morning, Fresno. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 25th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Boys and Girls Club of Fresno County announced a new initiative — United for Impact — to offer free year memberships to kids ages 6 to 18 connected with local non-profits like Fresno Mission, Marjaree Mason Center, and Poverello House. The program aims to help children feel a sense of belonging and build skills.  ABC30

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Wonderful Company and NFL star Josh Allen are partnering to expand a scholarship program in Firebaugh that will help first-generation students pay for college. Forty eligible seniors at Firebaugh High School will receive up to $12,000 over four years while more opportunities will soon be available for students in Wasco — a Kern farming community.  GV Wire
  • Clovis Unified teachers are close to unionizing and must choose between the CTA-backed Association of Clovis Educators (ACE) and the independent Clovis Unified Educators (ICUE) as they work to gather signatures from over half of the district’s 2,100 teachers within a year.  GV Wire

FINANCE NEWS

  • Area community banks reported mixed Q2 earnings as FFB Bancorp posted lower net income at $6.04 million compared to last year's $6.65 million and United Security Bancshares saw profits drop due to higher loan charge-offs, while Sierra Bancorp and Community West Bancshares recorded modest gains. Bank leaders attributed the results to tighter margins, slower loan demand and higher funding costs — challenges that affected performance in the quarter.  The Business Journal
  • Dow Janes helps women gain financial control by offering classes that teach basic money habits and investing skills. Co-founders Baker and King explain that a weekly review of finances—an hour spent tracking income and expenses—can make it simpler to start building wealth.  ABC30

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal court ruled against Grimmway Farms by finding that it did not offer injured workers enough work options and only put them on unpaid leave—an act deemed disability discrimination. The case will go to trial to decide the damages.  GV Wire
  • The city of Fresno launched a $100M bond-funded initiative called Pave More Now to repair streets across several corridors—crews have begun work on Shields Avenue from Palm to Fruit avenues, with Phase 1 set to finish by November and additional projects scheduled to start next spring.  The Business Journal
  • Local leaders in Fresno reported that a preliminary injunction granted on Tuesday stopped compliance with a federal executive order that would have cut over $100 million in grant funding for transportation and housing projects. Officials said the order would have required police to aid with immigration enforcement and remove diversity, equity and inclusion measures — moves that might have disrupted key projects like the expansion of Fresno Yosemite International Airport.  KMJ Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fitness trainer Rhonda Murphy showed that proper form on machines led to better workout results (she described clear tips for safe exercise).  ABC30
