COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fresno Mission CEO Matthew Dildine said that federal and state funds for over 800 shelter beds will drop in the next 18 months—potentially forcing many unhoused people to sleep on the streets. Mayor Jerry Dyer will meet every other month with Fresno Mission and local partners to form solutions for the crisis.  ABC30

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wild Waters Adventure Park began work today on its largest expansion—installing the endless river attraction for families. The project will finish by 2026.  KMPH

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sanger Unified held a dedication on Monday for its new state-of-the-art aquatic center at Sanger West High School near Fowler and Church in southeast Fresno. The $18 million project—funded by Measure C—features an Olympic-size pool that will cut waiting times by about 90 minutes for the swim teams.  ABC30
  • Fresno Unified School District released preliminary SBAC test scores for language and math that show a 2% gain from last year with 37% meeting or exceeding ELA standards and 27% meeting math standards (near pre-pandemic levels). The district will use these results to guide instruction while some groups (English learners and Filipino students) saw score declines.  GV Wire
  • Darrell Moton enrolled in a free truck driving training program offered by SCCCD and will begin classes in December — the eight-week program partners with Fresno County’s Economic Development Corporation and OK Produce to help students earn a commercial driver’s license.  KMJ Now
  • A Fresno County charter school was honored yesterday when Reedley Middle College High School’s agriculture department was named Overall Outstanding by the California Agriculture Teachers Association—eight students are preparing to compete in the national Future Farmers of America event in Indianapolis next month.  ABC30

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Fresno Chaffee Zoo won two awards from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums—one for its Kingdom of Asia exhibit and one for its Coexist with Wildlife program—showing its strong work in animal care and wildlife conservation.  KMPH

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Fresno City Council election season started with a candidate forum in District Three at Westside Church of God on West Cesar Chavez Boulevard, where five candidates discussed housing, health, and a plan for Southwest Fresno — issues that impact local residents.   • On September 25, Fresnoland aired a podcast recorded at Tioga Sequoia Brewing downtown where former LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, former Santa Monica Mayor Denny Zane, and Fresno City Council Vice President Miguel Arias discussed transit expansion lessons from LA—moderated by host Danielle.  Fresnoland
  • Michele Beckwith, a federal prosecutor from the U.S. Attorney's Office, was fired in July after she opposed a planned Border Patrol operation near Sacramento—she emailed Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino that a court order required probable cause before arrests and is now appealing her termination.  ABC30

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, mental health leaders in Fresno are marking Suicide Prevention Month by urging residents to speak up about their feelings—Dr. Amy Parks of NAMI Fresno said residents can call 988 to access free crisis counseling anytime.  ABC30
