BUSINESS NEWS

  • San Joaquin Manufacturing Alliance will host its 10th Annual Valley Made Manufacturing Summit on October 20 at Fresno Convention Center Exhibit Hall from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The summit will bring together education and industry leaders to boost workforce development and feature keynote speaker Oren Cass—known for his expertise in reshoring and domestic manufacturing.  The Business Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Fresno DRIVE's five-year report shows concentrated poverty fell 68% and median household income rose 55% to $69,000, moving the city to No. 235 in economic inclusion while noting that Black residents remain at higher risk of poverty. Fresno DRIVE will use $630 million from grants to support small Black businesses and downtown revitalization—boosting opportunities—while planning the next phase of community growth.  GV Wire

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fresno State student Ray Alfaro has often used the free Amendola Family Student Cupboard to stock up on groceries and ease his financial stress before classes—he relies on fresh produce and canned goods to keep his dorm supplied. This Thursday, ABC30 will partner with the Big Fresno Fair to sponsor Fill the Need Day to support the program that served over 23,000 students last year.  KMJ Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fresno County will soon start the Darden Clean Energy Project—a large solar and battery storage facility planned on 9-thousand acres of former farmland that is expected to bring millions in revenue every year. Local firefighters and residents have raised fire safety concerns and are working with project officials to add safeguards and build a new fire station in about two years.  KMPH
  • After nearly eight years of delay, Fresno City Council will review the West Area Neighborhood Specific Plan on Oct. 16 to improve west Fresno’s streets, sidewalks and school routes. Local officials praise the plan’s vision for a connected community + some property owners want changes to their land use.  GV Wire
  • On Monday, a memorial service was held at Cross City Christian Church in northeast Fresno to honor former Fresno County Sheriff and Fresno State professor Steve Magarian, who served from 1968 until retiring in 1999 and passed away in September at age 82.  ABC30
  • The city of Clovis declared October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month — a move to raise awareness and direct residents to local support services. During the Oct 6 city council meeting, Nicole Linder of the Marjaree Mason Center noted that over 600 reports were filed last year and recalled how a safe word used by Anna Richards on Oct 7, 2024 saved five lives.  The Collegian

  • Fresno residents buying health insurance through Covered California will face higher premiums if Congress does not extend enhanced tax credits by Oct. 15—some counties could see costs increase over 160%, which may force many families to struggle with rising bills.  Fresnoland
  • Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, Inc. in Fresno and Madera laid off 15 positions in September, with 4 positions in Fresno and 11 in Madera. The terminations were finalized on Sept. 24 — a move that joins similar job cuts at other Planned Parenthood sites statewide.  The Business Journal

  • A Fresno couple plans to bring Dill Dinkers—the nation’s fastest growing indoor pickleball club—to the Central Valley by opening at least 10 new facilities from Madera to Visalia, with start dates yet to be set. Bill and Georgia Revilla, who also work in real estate and healthcare, said the new clubs will offer quality courts and trained coaches.  The Business Journal
  • Fresno State will travel to Colorado State on Friday at 6 p.m. at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins—if they win, the Bulldogs will clinch bowl eligibility as coach Matt Entz said the team will stick to its short-week practice plan despite cloudy weather.  GV Wire
