COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fresno food banks are bracing for a surge in need as SNAP and CalFresh benefits end Saturday — nonprofits like Central California Food Bank, Poverello House, and Fresno Mission are preparing for a higher number of visitors. Officials say volunteers and donations are critical as federal funds face cuts and local produce supplies shrink — plans are in place to address a rough November.  GV Wire

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New projections from the California Department of Finance show Fresno County's population will reach about 1.08 million by 2045 and fall to roughly 1.01 million by 2070 — a sharp drop from earlier estimates. Local leaders now face the challenge of planning for a slower economy as fewer people move in and farm jobs may be automated.  Fresnoland
  • CalPERS lost 71% of its $468 million clean energy fund and the value dropped to about $138 million (as of March 31). Experts say the fund’s opaque fees put public money at risk (worrying many taxpayers).  GV Wire

SPORTS NEWS

  • Runners will join the Two Cities Marathon on Sunday along a scenic Fresno-Clovis course with races starting at 6:30 a.m.—the event features options from a certified full marathon to half, 10K, 5K, and a virtual run along with a post-race breakfast, live music, and free beer for finishers. Temporary road closures in Fresno and Clovis will begin as early as 5 a.m.—drivers should plan alternate routes and expect delays near the race course.  GV Wire
  • Fresno State suffered a historic 23-0 home shutout by San Diego State — marking its first home shutout — and will face Boise State on Saturday at Albertson’s Stadium with Carson Conklin continuing as quarterback.
