COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The FISH Fund held its annual gala on Sept. 6 at Pardini’s—raising $120,000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Fresno County to expand a program that teaches kids about gang and drug risks. The money will support 14 youth centers that help over 3,300 children and will reach 260 more kids in Fresno County. The Business Journal
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Fresno Unified School District was allegedly scammed out of over $2 million after it paid someone posing as its largest construction contractor—over $1 million was withdrawn and the rest is held by a credit union. KMJ Now
- ➤ Pumpkin Man, a long-time Halloween attraction, was stolen a couple weeks ago and the family built Pumpkin Man 2.0 dressed as a chef to keep the tradition alive—David’s little boy is set to take pictures with the new creation. KMPH
- ➤ Fresno County officials are investigating the illegal dumping of about 100 sheep carcasses at an isolated West Fresno County site where some carcasses looked fresh while others had only bones, and the sheriff's office said they will question local ranchers and work with public health to clean up the area soon. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Fresno Unified School District (FUSD) unveiled a new webpage yesterday listing food distribution dates and meal sites as SNAP benefits were set to lapse amid the government shutdown. The district has maintained free breakfast, lunch and supper programs since 2022 to support over 73,000 students, with about 40% relying on the meals. ABC30
- ➤ The California Collaborative for Educational Excellence is launching a pilot program that uses CART High in Clovis as a model for a redesigned high school system—featuring career labs and flexible classes that boost student engagement. - ➤ Michael Ballin explained at the ASI senate on Oct. 29 that the Student Cupboard is preparing for upcoming CalFresh cuts by using different vendors and adding new vending machines—he noted the food bank partner may face shortages.
