- ➤ Fresno residents enjoyed extended park hours after dark as City Council President Mike Karbassi announced Monday that a nearly $1 million lighting system was installed at Koligian Park to support youth sports, adult leagues, and community events. The lights turn on at sundown and off at 10 p.m.—boosting park access—so locals now have more time for recreation. ABC30
- ➤ A local nonprofit, the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation, will host an event in less than two weeks to support young burn survivors by giving them essential services and once-in-a-lifetime experiences—such as Champ camp and other recreation programs. - ➤ Liddell Elementary in Fresno was named a National Blue Ribbon School—the first in Central Unified—recognizing its efforts to close achievement and opportunity gaps and celebrating the commitment of long-time staff. - ➤ Fresno Unified is hosting a community forum on November 18 at the Farber Center for Professional Development to request parent feedback on restructuring its equity office. The Office of African American Academic Acceleration will become the Office of Advancing Academic Acceleration and Achievement—its changes are designed to align with district goals and federal guidelines restricting funding for race-based programs. - ➤ Fresno is expecting a heavy rain storm on Thursday with a 76% chance of at least an inch of rain as it begins Wednesday night and lasts into early Friday similar to last month’s record rain. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the Sierra Nevada where snow is forecast to fall from early Thursday morning to early Friday — with amounts of 6 to 12 inches at lower elevations and up to 2 feet higher up. - ➤ State lawmakers warned that without Affordable Care Act subsidies, premiums for 48,000 Fresno residents on Covered California will jump two to three times, with one family potentially facing an increase from $160 to $1,440, as discussed at a downtown hospital roundtable on Nov. 10. - ➤ Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control shows that from 2019 to 2023 Alzheimer’s was the fifth leading cause of death in the San Joaquin Valley—claiming over 9,000 lives and showing much lower rates among Latino residents compared to non-Hispanic whites.
